WHITE HOUSE DRUG POLICY OFFICE DEPUTY DIRECTOR JIM CARROLL's STATEMENT ON LAUNCH OF YOUTH OPIOID PREVENTION AD CAMPAIGN
The Office of National Drug Control Policy, in partnership with the Ad Council and the Truth Initiative, unveiled The Truth About Opioids Campaign, a media campaign aimed at preventing young adults from misusing and abusing opioids. We are focused on closing the knowledge gap on opioids. The first series of ads depict true stories of how quickly opioid addiction takes place and the extremes individuals go to in order to obtain more drugs.
Since taking office, President Donald J. Trump has made the opioid crisis a top priority for the entire Administration and this new campaign builds on the prevention goals outlined in both the Opioid Commission report and the President's Opioid Initiative. America is facing an opioid crisis that knows no bounds, and no community is immune. Every day an average of 116 people are dying, and every day more families are being torn apart. Due in part to these deaths, life expectancy is down two years in a row-the first two-year drop in more than 50 years. We can and must continue to take every step necessary to prevent opioid abuse before it begins. This public education campaign is research-based and multi-platform, designed to catch the attention of young people and direct them to resources to help educate them on the dangers of opioids.
